Biscuit and Gravy Bubble Up recipe – quick homemade sausage gravy tossed with refrigerated biscuits and cheddar cheese – simply DELICIOUS! Our favorite breakfast casserole! Equally delicious for lunch and dinner. Serve with some scrambled eggs, fruit, and mimosas for a meal better than any restaurant.
Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly spray a 9x13-inch pan with cooking spray.
Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until crumbly and no longer pink; remove from skillet, and drain.
In the same pan, melt butter. Whisk in flour and whisk constantly for one minute. Gradually whisk in whole milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly; cook until it starts to thicken, about two or three minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the cooked sausage.
Cut each biscuit into 6 pieces.
Place half of the biscuit pieces in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the sausage gravy. Sprinkle with half of the cheddar cheese.
Place the remaining biscuit pieces over the cheese. Top with the remaining sausage gravy and shredded cheese.
Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes:
I use a can of Pillsbury Grands buttermilk biscuits. You can use a can of flaky layer biscuits if you prefer.
I use Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage. You can use any brand or flavor that you enjoy.
Can substitute turkey sausage for a lower calorie option.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil if the biscuits start to get too brown.
Can omit the cheese if desired.
Make sure to spread the biscuit dough evenly in the baking dish so all of the biscuit dough gets cooked. You don't want any clumps of biscuit dough in the casserole.
Don't want to make the casserole? You can just bake some biscuits and serve them with the gravy recipe.
